Dressage vs Western, Horses
Horse Saddles Explained
There are many different types of equestrian activities, most of which use a variation of two saddles: English and Western. In general, one or the other is used for the wide range of equestrian events in the western world. The English saddle and its variants can be seen in use for dressage, polo, horse racing, show jumping, saddle seat and hunt seat competitions. Featured in rodeos, trail riding and ranching is the western or stock saddle.
The English saddle developed its modern form in 18th century England. During this time, fox hunting became a popular sport, but the saddles in use at this time had a high pommel and cantle which caused discomfort for the rider. What would later be known as the English saddle, a Frenchman developed in response to the need for a lighter saddle. Having a flatter appearance, both the rider and horse had more freedom to move.
Used by Spanish cattle ranchers in North America, the western saddle was originally taken from an Iberian design. Though much broader and heavier than the English saddle, its weight is evenly distributed. With a higher pommel and cantle to give comfort to the rider who might sit atop it for hours, it also comes with a horn. It also has a horn - a round knob attached to the pommel - to which a lariat may be tied.
The English saddle can be seen at all types of equestrian events in the English style. These include horse racing, polo, saddle seat, hunt seat, dressage and show jumping. Associated with cattle ranchers, cowboys and the American west, the western saddle and related forms can also be found in Argentina and Australia. Rodeos and trail riding are activities that use the western saddle. In addition, the stock saddle is most common among private horse enthusiasts in America.
One of these two types of saddle can be seen in use wherever horseback riding competitions are found.
