Frequently Asked Questions...
Show clothes question?
What kind of outfits do I wear for western pleasure and halter and showmanship. Where do i where a vest and a shirt?
Answer:
Different breeds have slightly different looks and standards. WHen an Morgan person shows their horse in-hand, they dress quite differently than an AQHA person, so to answer this question properly I need to know your breed.
Also, this varies somewhat from location to location also. What is popular and in style in Canada may vary somewhat from California!
Don't forget to check and see what rule book your shows will follow, there are specific details that can make a difference. For example, both AQHA and APHA require that you wear a "long sleeved shirt with a collar of some type" That means it can be a slinky (like a mock turtle neck) or a typical Western shirt. But it cannot be a tshirt type shirt because they do not have collars.
For Western pleasure you need - a cowboy hat, either felt or straw, that fits you well. Most associations also allow a safety riding helmet instead of a cowboy hat (even the big AQHA shows allow this, but you don't often see it) You need a long sleeved shirt with a collar. You can wear a vest if you desire. You need well fitting pants, preferably not blue jeans, in a color that matches your shirt, long enough to cover your heels.. You can wear chaps, they are prefered by not required even at the big shows (but everyone does wear them) preferably in the same color as your pants. You need a belt and buckle unless you have a vest that will cover them. You need safe riding boots with a heel, either cowboy boots or roper boots. You can use spurs, you can ride with a jacket.
For halter and showmanship you can use your Western pleasure outfit but of course never any spurs or chaps. In most cases people wear a jacket over their shirt, at the least they normally wear a vest. Showmanship is somewhat more dressy than typical bright Western pleasure outfits. You can find all sorts of co-ordinated showmanship outfits which are basically matching pants and tops in bright colors, but a good tidy shirt, vest and pants are also suitable.
Where do you find a vest and shirt? You can buy at local tack stores. You can buy street clothes and dress them up, but that is tough because they do fit slightly differently. You do not want any baggy sleeves when riding, you need a proper collar, so street clothes don't always work. You can borrow from a friend. I have lots of success by going on eBay and shopping second hand, you can buy lovely things for 1/2 or 1/3 the price of new.
Also, consider going onto Hobby Horse's website and looking at their information on what to wear for different classes (you don't have to buy their products, just look at their info) They show what is required at the different levels of shows (4-H verses small open shows verses the big Breed shows)
Hope that helps.
