Frequently Asked Questions...

Fitting a western saddle?

I know how to fit an english saddle, but it's been a long long time since I've had to fit an western saddle. I found two western saddles in my garage/tack room this morning that I didn't know existed! One is an Abetta that I was trying to buy used, and the other is a leather show saddle.

I know with an english saddle you're supposed to fit atleast 2-4 fingers uder the pommel, 2-3 fingers between the gullets on the back and the flaps shouldn't be pinching.

Whats the rule for western saddles?

I'm assuming the synthetic is for the QH, that I'd be using on him. They each have a leather show saddle and a synthetic, but I don't know if these are the right ones. There are too many saddles in that room, lol. Oh, and yes these are my saddles. We don't have boarders.
I WILL be having a proffessional look at it before I ride in it. I do want to ride in it once, to make sure it fits him before I take him to my trainer and waste precious lesson time, and money.

Answer:

Hahaha ....I so wish western saddles had such exacting rules as english saddles....it would make things soooooo much easier!

The most common problems with western saddle fit is ; pinching at the withers and bridging. The way you fit a western saddle is to place the saddle on the horse with no pad, run your hand up between the bars of the saddle and the horses back. There should be equal contact or pressure from the saddle bars in all places under them.
If there is a gap in the middle, then the saddle is bridging. If there is to much pressure at the withers or at the bottom of the bars then it will pinch. Also the bars should never go farther back than the last rib of the horse, this will ride on his kidneys and make his lower back sore.
If all that looks good, saddle up and ride enough to make your horse sweat under the saddle pad. Then stop and unsaddle, there should be no dry spots or welts, both of which indicate excessive pressure points.
A saddle may or may not fit according to the pad you use, for instance a saddle may fit just fine with a 1/2" thick pad but pinch with a 1" pad.

Now you see why I laughed... I wish there was a easy way, but there isn't.
