A Quick Explanation To The Origins Of Doctors
Both progress and the passage of time are responsible for polysyllabic names for the flu and normal office hours for the medical profession. Physicians have it much easer today than the general practitioners living in the country did years ago, although their job today is still demanding. This site teaches you about medical jobs in australia.
In a recent documentary about an urban city, a doctor talks about what it was like for the doctors in earlier times in that same area. Strangely enough, a doctor was the first white man to enter the city. This doctor was at the time on an expedition to explore the opportunities in the community. He concluded that a doctor was not in high demand in the area, and went back to his original posting where physicians had ample work and pay.
In those days, a few doctors practiced around the town, however, because there wasn't a thriving population with a lot of money, they found it difficult to earn a decent paycheck. And when the Civil War broke out, most of them decided it was time to move on. In the nineteenth century, doctors of the area were labeled the greatest unheralded heroes of all time. Pursuing a career as a doctor was a difficult undertaking for the men (and a few women) of that era. Physicians never really knew if or when they would get paid, and they would work around the clock and on holidays too. Even though some patients did pay their bills, the majority of them did not pay their doctors.
Rarely did a night go by without a hurried summons to a sick bed. Both the neighbors and the doctors would wake up to the sound of feet right outside and loud pounding on the front door. Then, once he hitched up a horse or two to the buggy, the sleepy doctor would set out on a chilly trek outside of the area. To get a closer look on doctor jobs in australia visit this site.
These physicians were not always paid in cold, hard cash for the work they performed. There were a lot of times when patients had to pay their bills with their farm produce or by going to work for the doctor. Needless to say, a few of the more industrious physicians sold a few medicines they had home brewed on the side. And this particular pioneer doctor was one that did just that.
Another very well-educated doctor, who wasn't limited by the ethical standards of the time, also made various cures of his own and sold them. In fact, he found some success with his treatment for headaches and neuralgia. At a price of three doses for ten cents, the client was promised that his problem would go away in about five to 20 minutes.
There were physicians who obtained income by starting their own drug stores. A certain physician became the proprietor of the first drugstore in this area, and he opened it on the main avenue through town. Three additional drug stores opened in quick succession, all owned and operated by doctors. With additional hospitals built shortly after, the first hospital coming into the locale enabled physicians to work under more reasonable conditions. Not long after that, a code of conduct and motto were developed that stated that the medical profession has increased greatly the hospital's efficiency and confidence, mostly because of superior knowledge and working facilities.
