Frequently Asked Questions...
24-hour turnout for my horse?
Hello...I currently board my horse at a stable where he is turned out only in the day time. He has a stall in the barn at night. I'm thinking of sending him to a friend's property where he will have 24 hour turnout, with run-in access to a small barn/shelter. I live in Canada, so the climate can get pretty cold in the winter. He will be able to huddle with two other horses in the run-in barn if he gets cold. I am having a hard time making the decision....I know he is a horse and they were meant to be outdoors. Part of me feels a bit cruel, and I worry he will be too cold or get sick, or worse, die....I know some people pamper horses too much. What does everyone think of 24-hour turnout?
Answer:
Horses are pretty resilient when it comes to weather. Most will grow a thick enough coat in winter to be warm, if not you can always blanket. Usually as long as they have a shelter to get out of the wind and rain, they'll be fine.
IMO, the health risks of spending half their time in a stall are much bigger than being outside.
