Frequently Asked Questions...
Small western horse show supplies and training?
In the spring I am going to e showing at some smal shows and work my way up. I was wondering what i will need (outfit, tack, etc.) and anything my horse NEEDS to know for the show ring. Also if you know any websites the sell these supplies and equipment please put that in your answer if you can. Thank you in advance!
Answer:
Well, for starters, you probably need a riding instructor or coach to help you learn the rules, and they can give you a lot of very good advice on what you need.
Your horse needs to know its leads at the lope, it needs to be able to change from one gait to the next smoothly and without fighting you, it needs to be soft in the mouth and learn to carry its head soft and low, and, for western, it needs to go SLOW at the jog trot and at the lope. If you do not know how to teach your horse these things, I urge you to find an instructor who can teach you.
For the stuff you need, you can see what a lot of the nice quality equipment looks like through a catalogue company called State Line Tack that markets to show people. To get an idea of what the latest show ring western clothing styles are, Hobby Horse clothing company has a fun catalogue to browse through (I think their stuff is overpriced, but they set the trends)
You may be able to find stuff locally that costs less, and it is possible to find decent used things on eBay if you shop carefully.
