Make Preparation For Pets During The Winter Months
If you have pets that normally stay outdoors, then you know that when the cold of winter comes that they sometimes need a warm place to spend the night. That warm spot can be inside a mud room or the garage, but it protects your pet from the rain, snow and wind. Here are a few things to consider as you prepare a winter retreat for your dog.
Even inside the mudroom or garage, the pet will need a nice warm dogs bed to be most comfortable. Many of these rooms have a concrete floor that will quickly remove heat from your pets body. A good quality bed acts as an insulator to keep the pet warm on the coldest of nights.
If there is more heat needed in the room, consider using a portable space heater on a low setting. Just be sure that it is away from combustible materials and out of reach of your pet. Keep cords so that the pet cannot chew through them. Most of these heaters have a safety switch that will turn them off if they are tipped over. Still you will want to keep an eye on the pet if the heat is on in the room.
Sometimes outside pets get wet and muddy before coming inside. If there is a muddy mess in the pets room, try using your Hoover wet dry vacuum to clean up. Once you get the water and mud picked up, you will want to use an old towel to remove the remainder of the mess. The vacuum will also pick up excess pet hair after the pet moves back outside to his favorite dog run.
If you cannot provide a place in the house for the pet, be sure that you at least provide a well insulated dog house. A waterproof piece of burlap can be hung over the door to keep the wind from blowing into the house and keep heat inside. Inside the dog house, add straw or wood shavings that will allow the pet to burrow down and keep even warmer.
Be sure that your pet has plenty of food for the cold winter days and nights. You should feed a larger portion than normal as the cold requires more calories for your pet to survive than would be needed on the warmer days.
When water is freezing outside, you pet still needs to have water to drink. Provide fresh water three to four times every day. Cold windy weather can lead to dehydration in pets, so for their health, be sure that you provide the water that is needed.
