Frequently Asked Questions...

Weather/Degree Recommendations for Tough-1 1200D Heavyweight Blanket?

What would you recommend this be worn i/what is it best suited for? I got one for my 28 y/o mare for winter and for during the cool nights in fall. I just put it on her and it's already dropped to 60 degrees from about 80 today(only 6:30 or 7:00 right now) and it usually gets much cooler. When I get up in the mornings, it's usually about 50 degrees, so I'd assume it's about that or lower at night(I wake up at 6am). Is this suitable? I'm worried she'll overheat, but I also don't want her catching a cold.

She has issues with her winter fur, also. It comes in okay some years, not so well other years.

On average, our fall days are about 50 degrees and our winter days are about 30-40 degrees. And that's only during the days, not nights.

Answer:

In that weather that blanket is WAY too thick. The only thing she needs in 50-60 degree weather is a light weight sheet. Most horses don't need anything in that weather. She shouldn't be wearing a heavyweight blanket until its at least 20 degrees outside. I would be extremely concerned about her overheating. I would buy another lighter sheet and save that one for much colder nights. Good luck
