With names like Stay Thirsty, Watch Me Go, and Pants On Fire; some of the entertainment of the Kentucky Derby is just to listen to the handles of the horses. While lounging in the grandstands you heed the name of another odd champ like 2011’s Animal Kingdom. You have got to giggle, even if you just bet a thousand dollars.
Let’s not forget, prior to the main event, there is pleasure and competition. It starts the two weeks leading up to the horse race. Each year, there is a fireworks show where you can lounge in the meadow, your car or along the stadium bleachers and watch the beautiful display perform in the night air. After the launching ceremonies, there are events for the athletic inclined, everything from basketball to baseball and soccer to volleyball. Do not forget to return to the grandstands to watch some of the many concerts. These shows are always going. There are all forms from rock to classic or country to swing.
Let us not disregard the Great Steamboat Races, which is the only of its type going on, which consists of racing registered riverboats. Most of these festivities cost nothing and the musical guests are pretty much 24/7. There really is something for everyone, from fancy balls to square dancing and all in between. So show up and have a great time.
The best thing at the races are in the entertainment of viewing the celebrities enter the grandstands. What’s this about? Because of the hats.
The royal wedding had nothing in comparison to this year’s selection of hats. Jennifer Tilly, known for her acting and voice over work, started the march with what seemed like a snake on top of a plum colored frisbee . Next was Erin Andrews, better known as “Dancing with the Stars” ex-contestant, who almost blew away in a gust of wind thanks to her oversized mess on her head. And let us not forget “Kate Plus8” celeb-mom Kate Gosling who seemed to have a lamp shade wrapped in feathers upside-down upon her head. Then the ever so un-classy Aubrey O’Day entered wearing on her head a bunch of deformed black and white straw.
At Churchill Downs it is known that you must wait until after the show of semi-famous people has settled in the grandstands, to start the main event. There are a bunch of things to do in the grandstands: bet, view a horse race or be entertained by the weird choice of hats the women are wearing. Wonder what will go on next time.
