Skateboarding, really - how tough can it be? Are you really just standing on it? And the skateboard does all or most of the work. Right? When you are starting out these are the questions you are probably asking yourself. It won't take long to know there's a bit more than standing on a rolling board. You'll need some skill, and you'll need to practice to get it.
And you'll need to practice more than once in a while. It's really a good idea to have some skills with the basics before moving on to more advanced skating. You can escape the initial beginner stage by using the following tips so you won't look like you first stepped on the board 5 minutes ago.
You can get yourself into better physical condition. Skateboarding is more physically exerting than you may realize. It really does take more than having strong legs. Skateboarding makes you use all your muscles to keep balanced and stable. And you'll really need them for more difficult tricks. You'll discover that as you get in better condition, your control over the skateboard will improve. If you're serious about skating, a regular and good exercise program will yield excellent results.
Don't have any worries about skateboarding slowly when you're learning. So many new skateboarders try to do tricks before they are really ready. Most of the time this only causes discouragement, frustration, and injuries. Being able to skate down the street without falling doesn't mean you have the right skills to execute tricks. Even doing a simple hop is harder than you think. Start skating slowly and try to be steady, then when you're ready go for longer distances. Learn to start fast and stopping the right way without any falls. When you're confident to skate steadily for a distance and can maneuver around pedestrians without falling, then you can start thinking about doing tricks.
Stopping is actually pretty complicated. When you are just beginning, you might have better luck simply dragging your foot to slow you down. You can also stop by using a foot to lightly touch the ground, like a short step, and this will stop you, too. Instead of a fluid motion in one direction, you want to take small steps in the opposite direction.
You may find this a bit hard on the ole feet, but you're young and it does work. When you're better, you can stop yourself quite smoothly by dragging the tail-end of the board. Caution: You'll want to avoid tail grinding if your speed is up there.
This doesn't need to be hard, but it will take some time to get some proficiency with. Hey, you'll learn it. Patience and no worries! But it is really important to get the basics down before moving ahead. Trying to do too much too soon is only good for getting injured. Keep doing it, you could be better than Tony Hawk.
